How to set goals like a boss

Setting goals is actually the easy part. Making progress towards achieving these goals and maintaining a consistent approach is the tough bit.

Have you ever felt like everyone around you are smashing their goals and making it look super easy, yet goal setting for you is sometimes such a challenge? Fear not, we can promise you that you’re not the only one!

The process of setting goals is such a powerful one as it enables you to think clearly about where you want to be. Something that we sometimes forget to focus on.

This is also something that can be applied in all aspects of your life.

Knowing where you want to be heading and setting yourself some amazing goals enables you to turn your vision into a reality.

This is all based on the process though. You can’t just set some goals and expect to have achieved them in next to no time, with little or no action taken on your side.

You have to make some decisions and take some real action to get you to where you want to be.

Below are some steps that can help you set some amazing goals, support you throughout the process and smash your goals like a BOSS!

Determine where you are heading

First things first, you've got to think about where you want to be, to cast the vision and to determine what life and business should look like for you.

Take some time to map out the areas of your life that you would like to focus on. Areas that you want to change for the better.

This could be anything such as your business, your love life, your physical health etc. The key here is to go with your gut feeling as generally that is the part that you truly want to improve or to change.

When doing this exercise think deeply about where you want to take each aspect that you write down. Think about where you are today and where you want to be. DON’T at this point think about the how, that will come later on in the process.

Our recommendation

We recommend doing this the old-school way with pen, paper, highlighters and post-it's but there are online options that don’t cost you a penny, if you’d prefer to use those instead.

Decide what is important

This is the time for you to get really specific.

Following the mind mapping exercise, it’s time for you to pick one area that you really want to hone in on. This will be your theme for setting some clear and SMART goals.

Without being specific you will have a bunch of goals that are disparate and that do not give you the focus and clarity that you’re going to need to move forward effectively throughout the process.

Choose well and commit to making it happen

Thinking back to your mind map and your focus area, ask yourself "what is it going to take for me to get to where I want to be?".

Be SMART about your goals too! Here's a breakdown of what that actually means, for those of you who are unsure.


Be SPECIFIC about what you want to achieve, how you will do it and why you want to achieve the goal.


Each goal needs to be MEASURABLE so think about how you will determine that you have achieved the goal.

An example here is a goal of ‘having more time’. This is not specific nor measurable as you have not defined how much time, or how you will use this.

A goal of ‘freeing up more of my time to go and watch the kids at football practice each Thursday afternoon’ is both specific and measurable and allows you to clearly see when you have reached the goal that you have set.


Make your goals ATTAINABLE. Think about what it is going to take you to achieve the goal i.e. money, time, effort.

Ask yourself honestly whether or not you can realistically achieve the goal that you have set. Now I am by no means saying don’t set your goals high as I wholly encourage you to do so, but you need to make sure that you can actually achieve them so that you:

A) Don’t lose motivation along the way and;

B) Don’t fail to achieve the goals that you’ve set. You don’t want that and we certainly don’t want that for you.


Make sure that your goals are RELEVANT. Ask yourself if achieving the goal that you have set will actually give you what it is that you’re after.

Think back to your mind map and ask yourself if the goals that you are setting actually enable you to get you to where you want to be, or have you lost sight along the way. Don’t be disheartened if this happens, it happens a lot of the time as it is so easy to get carried away, especially when goal setting.


Make sure that your goals are TIMELY. Set deadlines but make sure that they are realistic and that you do believe that you can actually achieve them.

Without deadlines it’s easy to ponder and overthink something too much, so this is important.

We would recommend only setting goals within a 3-month view initially, especially if you’re previous experience of goal setting has been a little poor as this will enable you to stay focused on an area and reduce the possibility of becoming overwhelmed.

Identifying what stays and what goes

This is the section where you may want to look at what can be delegated and/or outsourced. Now we are not saying that you should give everything to someone else to do as YOU are key to achieving your goals, but what we are saying here is that you do not need to do everything!

Think about what you could delegate to someone else in your team or outsource to someone else who can help you.

Asking for help when you need it is something that all of us struggle with from time to time, but if you want to get to where you want to be, you need to be really honest with yourself about what you can and can’t do.

Delegating and/or outsourcing will give you the time to focus on the core pieces of the puzzle and you know that the rest of it is in safe hands.

Making it work, work, work, work, work, work

Is that Rihanna song stuck in your head now, it is in ours!

Your success won’t happen on its own, you need to take immense action.

Make time for you to work on achieving your goals, so book out time in your schedule to focus on what you need to do to take you closer to where you want to be.

Don’t forget that the process should be enjoyable, if not challenging at times.
